Generally speaking, your insurance card or policy is sufficient as proof of cover when you're abroad. However, in exceptional cases certain countries may require an additional international confirmation of insurance. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA) is responsible for providing information on current requirements for your entry into and stay in other countries.
