Private supplementary accident insurance: added protection beyond the statutory cover

Whether you’re gardening, cycling or travelling, an accident can happen at any time. Private supplementary accident insurance protects you beyond statutory accident insurance and offers comprehensive, individual benefits – also as a supplement to your employer’s accident insurance in Switzerland.

Product highlights

  • Treatment as a private patient in the event of an accident – also abroad
  • Free choice of doctor and hospital
  • Extended protection beyond mandatory accident insurance
  • Financial security in the event of an accident

Find the protection that suits your needs

Check which benefits are covered by statutory accident insurance – and where there are gaps, or if you have other needs. With supplementary accident insurance, you can protect yourself as a private individual in a targeted manner and benefit from comprehensive protection and additional comfort. What you need to know: Employees who work eight hours or more per week for the same employer are covered by the employer’s accident insurance against the financial consequences of occupational and non-occupational accidents. Individuals who are not employed are covered by the accident insurance of mandatory health insurance (KVG), also known as basic insurance.

What benefits does basic insurance cover in Switzerland in the event of an accident?

Basic insurance covers basic medical care in the event of an accident, but has limitations in terms of comfort, choice and scope of benefits – especially when compared to supplementary accident insurance.

Benefits of basic insurance

  • Outpatient and inpatient treatments (medical care)
  • Hospital stays in the general ward
  • Medicines within the scope of treatment
  • Emergency transport
  • Emergency treatment abroad (costs covered within the scope of statutory requirements)

Limitations of basic insurance

  • No free choice of doctor or hospital
  • Co-payments in the form of an excess and a deductible
  • Benefits are limited to basic care

What you need to know

Basic insurance covers accident costs only if you do not have accident insurance (UVG) from your employer.

  • If you work eight hours a week or more with the same employer, you are insured by your employer.
  • If you work less than eight hours a week or are not employed, you must opt for accident cover with your basic insurance.
